First Things First

Don’t start without knowing your number one priority. And if you know it, don’t even start anywhere else.

Often times, our number one priority isn’t our number one choice. We would rather do something other than what we know is the most important thing, playing pretend productivity rather than work on what we know will matter most. We’d rather watch an insightful TED talk, open eight new tabs of articles, file our papers, or even do the dishes.

But let’s be honest. All those things can wait. Our life won’t worsen if we do them later, but our willpower weakens when we choose to not put first things first.

Later is not only unnecessary — it’s harmful. It’s deceitful and it’s manipulative. It’s our fear tricking us into a future we don’t ultimately want by baiting us with a present we think we prefer.

Don’t do it.

Give yourself the gift of putting first things first. Eat your vegetables and take your medicine, even if the thought of it makes you want to gag. Because putting first things first allows the most important person in your life to come first — the person you want to become.
