Spoiler Alert: It Doesn’t Get Easier

It might be disappointing to hear, but pursuing your dream may not get any easier. Putting in the practice, the hours that turn into days that must turn into months before it turns into years might feel as hard to show up for as it did the very first day.

In the beginning, the only hours that may be available to you are after hours. There’s a real possibility that much of the work that’s required to go from the grind of physically demanding to the privilege of creatively challenging will feel as unglamorous and unsexy as washing the dishes or taking out the trash.

After all that work, after all the bone ache, the tired nights, and the missing out, there’s a low chance that it gets easier.

But there’s a good chance that you’ll get better — more disciplined, more focused, more capable.

The silver lining of your greatest work being the hardest thing you’ve ever done is that you’ll have discovered the full depth of the hardest you ever worked. And although you may never want to work that hard ever again, you can also take confidence in knowing that you can if you need to.
