Mastering your craft is a never-ending process. No matter what goal you set, whether it’s a sales goal or a to publish a book or to release an album, the majority of your time will only diverge towards a few different ways.

Setting more goals that are supposed to lead somewhere, such as an IPO, a book award, or being inducted into a hall of fame.

Or just continue to keep on working on your craft, every single day, to get better and better. Along the way, you’ll likely craft things for others — things that bring joy or value — and the ones that really make an impact will be meaningful. But the majority of a craftsman’s days will be about the work. There is no end goal or finish line except for continuing to craft works and products and getting better at doing so.

The value in this is remembering that there is no rush or urgency, that if you’re truly committed to the craft and mastering it then you are dedicating your life to it.

Whether you’re up or down will vary day by day, but day after day the aim is the same, to do better than the last.
